SUMMARY:Movie Night: Ava DuVernay’s “Origin”
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 22 \n5pm – 8pm ET \nWRJI invites you to view and discuss Ava DuVernay’s 2023 film “Origin”. A rich and poignant bio drama\, “Origin” tells the story of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson’s personal and intellectual journey as she wrote the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.  \nThe movie has been aptly described as “A moving drama that’s unafraid to ask big questions” and “honors its source material with powerful performances in service of a deeply emotional story.” Join us in uplifting the work of Black female artists and intellectuals such as DuVernay and Wilkerson\, and to learn and share with your Wellesley sibs. \nDiscussion will be led by Tyree Oredein ’98 and co-facilitated by Natasha Chang ’93.  \nView the film trailer here.

SUMMARY:"Race Rules": An Interactive Discussion with Author Fatimah Gilliam ‘96
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a unique\, engaging\, and provocative conversation about race in the US today\, with leading anti-racism activist and consultant\, Fatimah Gilliam ‘96\, author of Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won’t Tell You. Our program will include an expert interview with the author by a WRJI leader\, productive small group dialogue\, and a plenary conversation with the author\, WRJI leaders\, and alums. All alums can benefit from this event\, regardless of how you identify and/or your stage of learning about race and racism. You will be challenged\, respected and supported in your anti-racism journey\, even as you advance the growth of others. \nRace Rules is a pragmatic response to this moment in American history – seeking to drive equity and behavioral change\, while helping people navigate polarizing issues and expand cultural fluency across race. This distinctive antiracism book provides critical how-to advice on effective cross-racial allyship\, following up with tangible tools and action steps for all readers. As one reviewer writes\, “Fatimah Gilliam says the quiet part out loud.”  Moreover\, Race Rules provides Black-identified readers with historical and individual validation for shared experiences\, as well as concrete words and talking points to support them.  \nWant to join the discussion\, but won’t be on campus? We’re pleased to offer participation via Zoom! Trained facilitators will coordinate virtually with Zoom attendees for the small group discussion portion. Please register by Thursday\, May 23 if you wish to participate virtually. The Zoom link will be sent in advance of the workshop.

SUMMARY:Skill Building for Allies: A 3-part series
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, 8 pm – 9:30 pm E \nTickets for Session III: Disrupting Racism $30 still available \nAs a person with white privilege\, do you want to cause less harm in your interactions with People of the Global Majority (PGM)? As a person of color\, are you seeking to work more effectively with other BIPOC and white allies?  \nFrom the personal to the systemic\, we are called upon to grow and develop our ability to notice\, disrupt and collaborate to end racism. These three interconnected programs will offer increasingly intensive investigations of the skills needed to become effective anti-racism activists. \n  \n \nCOMPLETED Session I: Recognizing Microaggressions –  Wednesday\, April 24 \nThrough presentation and discussion\, we will define microaggressions and explore the kinds of harm regularly experienced by members of oppressed groups\, whether from individuals or systems\, intentional or not. Participants will probe the factors that prevent us from recognizing and addressing microaggressions when we encounter them and identify some of the skills we need to intervene when we witness microaggressions and apologize when we commit them ourselves. \nFacilitated by Tyree Oredein ‘98 and Polly Talen ’77. \n  \n COMPLETED Session II: Effective and Respectful Allyship – Wednesday\, May 8 \nThis session explores effective allyship in anti-racism work\, both personal and systemic. Some questions we will explore – as an alum with white privilege\, what is your role in dismantling white supremacy; as a PGM\, how can you strengthen allyship with other PGM and improve your experience of working in alliance with white folks?  \nWe will explore some of the capabilities of effective anti-racist such as – how to negotiate roles with humility and respect\, how to support and advocate when a PGM ally is being disrespected\, and how to center the lived experience of oppression and remain open to learning. \nFacilitated by Tyree Oredein ’98 and Jessica Strauss ’77. \n  \nSession III: Disrupting Racism – May 22nd \nThis interactive experience offers both people with white privilege and PGM a brave space to practice intervening in episodes of racism\, whether personal or institutional\, to support those being harmed\, and to learn the art of constructive feedback. Through role-playing\, participants will address all-too-common racist remarks and practices\, whether intentional or not. Hone your skills in collaboration with those who support your effectiveness. This is a practice session you will want to experience more than once! \nFacilitated by a team of experienced professionals and trained volunteers. \nThese sessions are offered as a progressive series\, and we encourage you to participate in all three interactive programs. However\, if you have attended one of the programs before\, or have covered similar material in a different setting\, you are welcome to register for sessions individually.  \nNote that perspectives and training methodologies differ\, and you may benefit from participating in a session even if you are familiar with the concepts. If you have questions about your readiness for a particular session\, please reach out to the Executive Coordinator at ExecutiveLead@wrji.org. \nWRJI is a non-profit organization. We offer professional compensation to our facilitators; some provide the service pro bono. Your fee for this workshop covers the cost of providing these services. If you wish to contribute to help support the participation of others\, we are pleased to accept your donation. If the cost is an obstacle to your participation\, please contact the Executive Coordinator at ExecutiveLead@wrji.org to request a reduced price or complementary registration.

SUMMARY:Book Club - "Black Fatigue: How Racism Erodes the Mind\, Body\, and Spirit" by Mary-Frances Winters
DESCRIPTION:This is the first book to define and explore Black fatigue\, the intergenerational impact of systemic racism on the physical and psychological health of Black people–and explain why and how society needs to collectively do more to combat its pernicious effects. \nBlack people\, young and old\, are fatigued\, says award-winning diversity and inclusion leader Mary-Frances Winters. It is physically\, mentally\, and emotionally draining to continue to experience inequities and even atrocities\, day after day\, when justice is a God-given and legislated right. And it is exhausting to have to constantly explain this to white people\, even–and especially–well-meaning white people\, who fall prey to white fragility and too often are unwittingly complicit in upholding the very systems they say they want dismantled. \nThis book\, designed to illuminate the myriad dire consequences of living while Black\, came at the urging of Winters’s Black friends and colleagues. Winters describes how in every aspect of life–from economics to education\, work\, criminal justice\, and\, very importantly\, health outcomes–for the most part\, the trajectory for Black people is not improving. It is paradoxical that\, with all the attention focused over the last fifty years on social justice and diversity and inclusion\, little progress has been made in actualizing the vision of an equitable society. \nSummary: Goodreads \n  \nThe discussion will be led by Fiona Oliphant ’93.  While the conversation will be centered around Black fatigue\, everyone is welcome to attend and participate.  \n  \nAdvance registration is required. Please register by Thursday\, March 21

SUMMARY:Movie Night - "Stamped From the Beginning"
DESCRIPTION:“Stamped from the Beginning” is a documentary exploring the history of anti-black\, racist ideas in America\, based on Ibram X. Kendi’s best-selling novel.  \nSome Americans insist that we’re living in a post-racial society. But racist thought is not just alive and well in America–it is more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. As. Kendi argues\, racist ideas have a long and lingering history\, one in which nearly every great American thinker is complicit. \nAs Kendi shows\, racist ideas did not arise from ignorance or hatred. They were created to justify and rationalize deeply entrenched discriminatory policies and the nation’s racial inequities.  \nIn shedding light on this history\, Stamped from the Beginning offers us the tools we need to expose racist thinking. In the process\, it gives us reason to hope. \n                                                                                               Summary: Amazon.com \n  \nThe discussion will be led by Dr. Tyree Oredein ’98.  \nCheck out the film trailer here.  \nAdvance registration is required. Please register by Friday\, February 23.

SUMMARY:How to be a Better Ally
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special Giving Tuesday program focusing on being a better ally. Created and facilitated by Fiona Oliphant\, Esq\, ’93\, this popular workshop is intended to help alums to grow and deepen their understanding of effective allyship in anti-racism work. We will explore in depth the most effective ways to offer support\, to intervene\, to plan and execute action with and in solidarity with BIPOC folx.  \nThrough presentation and discussion\, white alums will have the opportunity to challenge themselves: what is your motivation?\, what are you willing to give\, and give up\, to dismantle white supremacy? BIPOC alums are invited to grow stronger allyship with one another and to share their experiences\, positive and challenging\, of working in alliance with well-meaning white folks.

SUMMARY:Movie Night - Nappily Every After
DESCRIPTION:A woman’s identification with her hair can be a powerful thing\, but for a Black woman\, it is a tangled identity fraught with the ongoing effects of racism\, respectability politics and beauty standards that have historically marginalized our hair along with everything else. \nBased on the bestselling book by Trisha R. Thomas\, Nappily Ever After is the story of one woman’s breakthrough—and the hair that might be holding her back. \nSanaa Lathan plays Venus Johnson\, a beautiful and highly successful woman who seems to have everything except the ring she so deeply desires. When her longtime boyfriend refuses to commit\, she cuts him off—and her hair soon follows. Forced to find out who she really is behind the curtain\, Venus must face her insecurities and dismantle everything she thought she knew about herself\, hopefully growing into her truth in the process.       \n                                                                                          Summary: TheRoot.com \nThe discussion\, led by Tyree Oredein ‘98 will be centered around beauty\, heritage and identity defined by Black hair. Conversation will include the Crown Act and how hair discrimination is rooted in systematic racism. While the conversation will be centered around Black hair\, alums of all identities are welcome to attend and participate in the discussion. \nAdvance registration is required. Please register by Monday\, November 13. \n
