SUMMARY:WRJI Book Club: Do Better: Spiritual Activism for Fighting and Healing From White Supremacy
DESCRIPTION:WRJI Book Club: Do Better: Spiritual Activism for Fighting and Healing From White Supremacy by Rachel Ricketts \nSaturday March 15\n12pm – 1:30pm ET\nZoom\nFree \nJoin WRJI for a discussion of Do Better – a revolutionary book that addresses anti-racism from a comprehensive\, intersectional\, and spiritually-aligned perspective. This actionable guidebook illustrates how to engage in the heart-centered and mindfulness-based practices that racial justice educator and healer Rachel Ricketts has developed to fight white supremacy from the inside out\, in our personal lives and communities alike. It is a loving and assertive call to do the deep—and often uncomfortable—inner work that precipitates much-needed external and global change. \nRadical racial justice includes daily\, intentional\, and informed action. It demands addressing the emotional violence we have perpetuated on ourselves and others (most notably toward Black and Indigenous women and femmes)\, both as individuals and as a society. Do Better provides the missing pieces to manifest practicable\, sustainable solutions such as identifying where we most get stuck\, mitigating the harm we inflict on others\, and mending our hearts from our most painful race and gender-based experiences\, plus much more. \nThis inspirational and eye-opening handbook is filled with carefully curated soulcare activities for getting into our bodies and better withstanding the grief\, rage\, and conflicting emotions that naturally arise when we fight against injustice. Culturally informed\, secular spiritual exercises\, such as guided meditations\, transformative breathwork\, and journaling prompt unpack our privilege\, and take up the ongoing fight against oppression\, while transforming our own lives along the way. \nThe discussion will be led by Fiona Oliphant ’93. The Zoom link will be sent in advance of the event.

SUMMARY:Transgenerational Trauma in Peoples of African and Asian Descent
DESCRIPTION:WRJI\, WAAD & W3A present: Transgenerational Trauma in Peoples of African and Asian Descent \nSunday\, March 9\n4pm – 6pm ET\nVia Zoom\nFree \nTransgenerational trauma – the legacy of a traumatic event that gets passed down from those who directly experienced it to future generations – is a phenomenon that is deeply felt in both the Black and Asian communities. These are communities in which many ancestors and elders have lived experience of events such as forced displacement\, enslavement\, war\, colonization\, racism\, sexualized violence and poverty. The children and grandchildren of those who have lived through traumatic events grow up knowing – sometimes explicitly and sometimes only subconsciously – that their ancestors suffered and were not protected. They can feel trauma\, and they can show trauma symptoms even though their lives may be relatively safe and peaceful by comparison. \n  \nJoin us to learn about the individual and collective impact of transgenerational trauma in the Black and Asian communities. Panelists include: Dr. Tauchiana Wiliams ’01\, Dr. Julie Lee ’91\, Professor Samuel Ng\, and  Professor Stephen Chen.  \nAdvance registration is required. The Zoom link will be sent in advance of the event.  \nThis event is open to WAAD and W3A members\, the WRJI community\, alums who may have experienced generational trauma\, and other Wellesley alums who ally with Asian and Black communities. \nWRJI is an independent movement of Wellesley alums who actively promote racial justice in national culture and practice\, as well as the wider community\, in an attempt to advance inclusion and eliminate systemic\, institutional and internalized racism. \nWellesley Alumnae of African Descent (WAAD)  and Wellesley Asian Alumnae Alliance (W3A) are shared identity groups of the Wellesley College Alumnae Association.  \n

SUMMARY:Giving Tuesday 2024: An Invitation to Action - Together
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, December 3\n8pm – 9pm EST\nVia Zoom\nFree \nYes\, it’s Giving Tuesday\, the one day of the year when the non-profit world grabs the  mic and asks folks to give. This year we are motivated to ask\, “What else can we do – besides give? What can we DO?”  \nJoin WRJI facilitators and volunteers for a facilitated conversation about taking critical anti-racism action – together. We look to engage each other in discussion about how each of us can generate or join collective action to combat white supremacy. We will ground the conversation in principles of positive allyship\, and lessons from its pitfalls. Then we will explore together how PGM folks and white allies can act together to protect the most vulnerable\, to shine light in the darkness\, and to move the arc towards justice even when it seems to be moving in the opposite direction.  \nWe will each leave the discussion with one thing we commit to doing – however small or expansive – inspired by collective will. This is a time for mutual support\, personal responsibility\, and collective action. Let’s dive in. \nThe Zoom link will be sent in advance of the event.

SUMMARY:"Race Rules": An Interactive Discussion with Author Fatimah Gilliam ‘96
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a unique\, engaging\, and provocative conversation about race in the US today\, with leading anti-racism activist and consultant\, Fatimah Gilliam ‘96\, author of Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won’t Tell You. SUMMARY:Skill Building for Allies: A 3-part series
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, 8 pm – 9:30 pm E \nTickets for Session III: Disrupting Racism $30 still available \nAs a person with white privilege\, do you want to cause less harm in your interactions with People of the Global Majority (PGM)? As a person of color\, are you seeking to work more effectively with other BIPOC and white allies?  \nFrom the personal to the systemic\, we are called upon to grow and develop our ability to notice\, disrupt and collaborate to end racism. These three interconnected programs will offer increasingly intensive investigations of the skills needed to become effective anti-racism activists. \n  \n \nCOMPLETED Session I: Recognizing Microaggressions –  Wednesday\, April 24 \nThrough presentation and discussion\, we will define microaggressions and explore the kinds of harm regularly experienced by members of oppressed groups\, whether from individuals or systems\, intentional or not. Participants will probe the factors that prevent us from recognizing and addressing microaggressions when we encounter them and identify some of the skills we need to intervene when we witness microaggressions and apologize when we commit them ourselves. \nFacilitated by Tyree Oredein ‘98 and Polly Talen ’77. \n  \n COMPLETED Session II: Effective and Respectful Allyship – Wednesday\, May 8 \nThis session explores effective allyship in anti-racism work\, both personal and systemic. Some questions we will explore – as an alum with white privilege\, what is your role in dismantling white supremacy; as a PGM\, how can you strengthen allyship with other PGM and improve your experience of working in alliance with white folks?  \nWe will explore some of the capabilities of effective anti-racist such as – how to negotiate roles with humility and respect\, how to support and advocate when a PGM ally is being disrespected\, and how to center the lived experience of oppression and remain open to learning. \nFacilitated by Tyree Oredein ’98 and Jessica Strauss ’77. \n  \nSession III: Disrupting Racism – May 22nd \nThis interactive experience offers both people with white privilege and PGM a brave space to practice intervening in episodes of racism\, whether personal or institutional\, to support those being harmed\, and to learn the art of constructive feedback. Through role-playing\, participants will address all-too-common racist remarks and practices\, whether intentional or not. Hone your skills in collaboration with those who support your effectiveness. This is a practice session you will want to experience more than once! \nFacilitated by a team of experienced professionals and trained volunteers. \nThese sessions are offered as a progressive series\, and we encourage you to participate in all three interactive programs. However\, if you have attended one of the programs before\, or have covered similar material in a different setting\, you are welcome to register for sessions individually.  \nNote that perspectives and training methodologies differ\, and you may benefit from participating in a session even if you are familiar with the concepts. If you have questions about your readiness for a particular session\, please reach out to the Executive Coordinator at ExecutiveLead@wrji.org. \nWRJI is a non-profit organization. We offer professional compensation to our facilitators; some provide the service pro bono. Your fee for this workshop covers the cost of providing these services. If you wish to contribute to help support the participation of others\, we are pleased to accept your donation. If the cost is an obstacle to your participation\, please contact the Executive Coordinator at ExecutiveLead@wrji.org to request a reduced price or complementary registration.

SUMMARY:Session II: Effective and Respectful Allyship
DESCRIPTION:This session explores effective allyship in anti-racism work\, both personal and systemic.

SUMMARY:Session I: Recognizing Microaggressions
DESCRIPTION:Through presentation and discussion\, we will define microaggressions and explore the kinds of harm regularly experienced by members of oppressed groups\, whether from individuals or systems\, intentional or not. Participants will probe the factors that prevent us from recognizing and addressing microaggressions when we encounter them and identify some of the skills we need to intervene when we witness microaggressions and apologize when we commit them ourselves. \n  \nFacilitated by Tyree Oredein ‘98 and Polly Talen ’77.

SUMMARY:Book Club - "Black Fatigue: How Racism Erodes the Mind\, Body\, and Spirit" by Mary-Frances Winters
DESCRIPTION:This is the first book to define and explore Black fatigue\, the intergenerational impact of systemic racism on the physical and psychological health of Black people–and explain why and how society needs to collectively do more to combat its pernicious effects. \nBlack people\, young and old\, are fatigued\, says award-winning diversity and inclusion leader Mary-Frances Winters. It is physically\, mentally\, and emotionally draining to continue to experience inequities and even atrocities\, day after day\, when justice is a God-given and legislated right. And it is exhausting to have to constantly explain this to white people\, even–and especially–well-meaning white people\, who fall prey to white fragility and too often are unwittingly complicit in upholding the very systems they say they want dismantled. \nThis book\, designed to illuminate the myriad dire consequences of living while Black\, came at the urging of Winters’s Black friends and colleagues. Winters describes how in every aspect of life–from economics to education\, work\, criminal justice\, and\, very importantly\, health outcomes–for the most part\, the trajectory for Black people is not improving. It is paradoxical that\, with all the attention focused over the last fifty years on social justice and diversity and inclusion\, little progress has been made in actualizing the vision of an equitable society. \nSummary: Goodreads \n  \nThe discussion will be led by Fiona Oliphant ’93.  While the conversation will be centered around Black fatigue\, everyone is welcome to attend and participate.  \n  \nAdvance registration is required. Please register by Thursday\, March 21

SUMMARY:Movie Night - "Stamped From the Beginning"
DESCRIPTION:“Stamped from the Beginning” is a documentary exploring the history of anti-black\, racist ideas in America\, based on Ibram X. Kendi’s best-selling novel.  \nSome Americans insist that we’re living in a post-racial society. But racist thought is not just alive and well in America–it is more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. As. Kendi argues\, racist ideas have a long and lingering history\, one in which nearly every great American thinker is complicit. \nAs Kendi shows\, racist ideas did not arise from ignorance or hatred. They were created to justify and rationalize deeply entrenched discriminatory policies and the nation’s racial inequities.  \nIn shedding light on this history\, Stamped from the Beginning offers us the tools we need to expose racist thinking. In the process\, it gives us reason to hope. \n                                                                                               Summary: Amazon.com \n  \nThe discussion will be led by Dr. Tyree Oredein ’98.  \nCheck out the film trailer here.  \nAdvance registration is required. Please register by Friday\, February 23.

SUMMARY:Movie Night - Nappily Every After
DESCRIPTION:A woman’s identification with her hair can be a powerful thing\, but for a Black woman\, it is a tangled identity fraught with the ongoing effects of racism\, respectability politics and beauty standards that have historically marginalized our hair along with everything else. \nBased on the bestselling book by Trisha R. Thomas\, Nappily Ever After is the story of one woman’s breakthrough—and the hair that might be holding her back. \nSanaa Lathan plays Venus Johnson\, a beautiful and highly successful woman who seems to have everything except the ring she so deeply desires. When her longtime boyfriend refuses to commit\, she cuts him off—and her hair soon follows. Forced to find out who she really is behind the curtain\, Venus must face her insecurities and dismantle everything she thought she knew about herself\, hopefully growing into her truth in the process.       \n                                                                                          Summary: TheRoot.com \nThe discussion\, led by Tyree Oredein ‘98 will be centered around beauty\, heritage and identity defined by Black hair. Conversation will include the Crown Act and how hair discrimination is rooted in systematic racism. While the conversation will be centered around Black hair\, alums of all identities are welcome to attend and participate in the discussion. \nAdvance registration is required. Please register by Monday\, November 13. \n
